Hersek Lagoon has been designed as the first and only ‘’Accessible Protected Area’’ which serves the handicapped and their families.

Hersek Lagoon also offers a suitable living space for summer migrants who come for breeding during the summer months. In the area, there are important bird species that breed in colonies, especially on the coastline between the sea and the lake.

Hersek Lagünü

Hersek Lagoon has been designed as the first and only ‘’Accessible Protected Area’’ which serves the handicapped and their families.

It is 27 km away from Yalova and is located within the boundaries of Altınova District. The area is 167 hectares. It was registered as a Wetland with Local Importance on 23.02.2016. The lagoon is separated from the Marmara Sea by a thin coastline.

History

The Hersek Lagoon is Turkey's only lake that has a title deed certificate. According to the sources, the title deed of the lake was given to Hıfzı Bey, who settled in Lake Hersek from Thessaloniki. Refik Hıfzı Bey donated all his assets to Darülaceze in 1950.
